July 2009

Sixty members attended the AGM of The Topsham Society held at the Globe Malthouse on Wednesday 3rd June.  Three new members were elected to our Committee: Chrissie Edginton, who was co-opted earlier in the year and who is already working with Jacqueline Cummins and Garth Flint to arrange The Society’s Autumn and Winter talks; Eliot Wright, who leads the group of volunteers who look after the parcel of land at the end of the Goat Walk; and Malcolm Holding, who is one of the Topsham Walk Guides, which, under the direction of Daphne Burdick, provide guided tours of the town for hundreds of visitors each year.  They replace Graham Norwood (who stood down earlier in the year) Philip Donville-Muster and Frances Nieduszynska.  They have all made significant contributions to The Society’s work over the years and this has been much appreciated by their colleagues on the Committee.

During the meeting the Society’s President, John Conolly, called on Francis Luscombe to speak in appreciation of Hugh Aplin, a former Treasurer of the Society, who sadly had died during the year.  Francis said that the Society had benefited greatly from Hugh’s professional and personal skills.  He had been much more than a Treasurer and had made many significant contributions, including the introduction of regular Newsletters and helping to plant the trees in the Goat Walk plantation.  He said that the Society was much the better for Hugh’s contribution and that he was sorely missed by all who knew him.

After the formal meeting the Enhancing Topsham Award was presented by John Conolly to Bettine Rogers of the Topsham Station Adoption Group for their work in brightening up Topsham Station.

The evening concluded with a talk from Katharine Metcalf, the Conservation Officer at Exeter City Council, who brought us up to date with the work on the Topsham Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan.  She told us that a final draft of the document is now being prepared for consideration by councillors, and that this will include more detailed management plans than those in the original draft.
