March 2009

There were a total of six nominations for this year’s Enhancing Topsham Award.  After careful consideration of the eligibility and the merits of each of the nominations, it has been decided that this year’s award should go to the Topsham Station Adopters Group for the improvements they have made to Topsham Station under the auspices of the Avocet Line Rail Users Group.  The work, including the introduction of a series of flower planters and new information boards, has been undertaken entirely by volunteers.  The Avocet Line Rail Users group exists to promote and protect this vital public transport link.

The last in the current series of The Topsham Society’s talks will be given by Christine Trigger. The title of her talk is ‘Fred Karno “Master of Mirth and Tears”’. Fred Karno was born in Exeter in 1866 (died 1941) and was a theatre impresario. He transformed the music hall by creating a riot of laughter out of chaos. Christine Trigger was one of Exeter’s Red Coat guides. The talk will be on Thursday 12th March at 7.30 p.m. in Matthews Hall.  Entry is free to members and £1 to non members.  Wine and tea/coffee will be available during the interval.
