April 2010 The Topsham Society’s summer outing this year is on Wednesday 2 June, to Mapperton House and Gardens, near Bearminster in West Dorset. There will be a coffee stop on the way in Axminster at Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s “Canteen”. Mapperton House was voted “The Nation’s Finest Manor House” in Country Life and has an Italianate garden, topiary, grottos and ponds. An application form will be distributed to all members of The Topsham Society soon, so do apply early! More details of the outing will be included in next month’s Estuary, together with information on how non-members can book a place. Another date for your diaries is our Annual General Meeting, which will be in The Globe Malthouse on Thursday 10 June. Following the formal meeting there will be a talk from Jenny Lockett, the Exe Estuary Officer. More details will be in next month’s Estuary. One of Topsham's curious and charming features is the presence of the old water pumps, still to be found around the town. Those in Monmouth Hill and Underhill Terrace are protected as 'Listed Buildings' but there are several others scattered around the town. In collaboration with Topsham Museum we would like to determine how many of these pumps are authentic and in their original locations. We will then consider whether to propose that these should also be Listed. If you have any information or concerns about a pump near you, David Woods or I would be pleased to hear from you.
