September 2010

The Topsham Society has decided to review the Townscape Review and Design Statement published in 2005 in the context of changes since that time and in response to the Action Plan contained in the Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan recently completed by Exeter City Council. Copies of the Review from 2005 are still available if anyone would like to review it either for themselves or as a contribution to our working party. Please contact me on 877526 if you would like a copy.

We will also be considering the City Council’s draft Core Strategy Development Plan Document which has been issued for consultation with responses required by 24 September. A copy of the document is available for inspection in Topsham library.

Topsham in Bloom Results 2010
At the end of July, the Topsham in Bloom judges walked around the Town looking at the entrants in this year's Competition.  Because of the dry summer, the number of entries was slightly down on last year, nevertheless the Judges said that the quality was first class and a great indication of a lively community spirit in Topsham.  The list of winners and runners up includes many new names, which should be of great encouragement to those who have hitherto been unsuccessful.

The judges asked us to congratulate everyone who took part, and to say thank you for their help in making our Town look even more attractive.

The full list of results was:- Residential Front Gardens. Winner, 18 Victoria Road. Runner Up, 7 Tresillian Cottages. Highly Commended, 17 Ashford Road & 1 Pound Lane. Residential tubs etc. Winner, 5 Trees Court. Runners Up, 6 Victoria Road & 2-4 Majorfield. Highly Commended, 11 White Street, Glove House & above Avocet Café. Shops etc. Winner, Suzanne/Footworks. Runner Up, The Wardrobe.   Non-Residential. Winner, La Petite Maison. Runner Up, The Globe Hotel. Community Groups. Clara Place. Runners Up, 30-35 Globefield & Grove House.

The Winners Awards were presented in Matthews Hall on Sunday 22 August as part of the prize giving for the Topsham Allotments and Gardens Association Annual Show.

Topsham School Art Prize
John Conolly and Daphne Burdick visited The Topsham School on 19th and 20th July to see art work which had been done by  children aged six years competing for the Topsham Society Jubilee Cup.  The theme for the competition was wild life on the River Exe, and John and Daphne were able to talk to the children about their work before undertaking the difficult task of selecting a winner.  The standard of the entries was very high, and it seemed a pity that there should be only one winner, but it was eventually decided that the award should go to Luke Anderson for a small model of an avocet constructed from pieces of drift wood glued together.  This was an outstanding piece of work, and richly deserved the prize which consisted of two book tokens to the value of £5 each, one to be exchanged at Joel Segal's book shop in Topsham, and one to be spent elsewhere.  John and Daphne attended the end of term assembly to present the award. Luke will keep the Cup at home during the summer holiday, and return it to the School at the beginning of next term.

Programme of Talks
Our programme of evening talks will be published with our Autumn newsletter at the beginning of October. The first talk of the season will be on Thursday 21 October, Trafalgar Day, when the subject will reflect the importance of the date.
