January 2011

Parking continues to be an issue for many people in Topsham and we await clarity from the County Council as to their current plans.

Meanwhile, the new footway crossing and dropped kerb which has been created outside 88 Fore Street, Topsham is in a place where parking is currently permitted.   Signs have been erected outside 88 Fore St asking people not to park outside and traffic cones have been put in place.  This has the effect of removing an on-street parking space; these are already at a premium in Topsham.

We have sent what we think is a 'win/win' suggestion to Devon County Council which would see the creation of a replacement parking space, together with the retention of the dropped kerb..

Just eight yards further along from 88 Fore Street, outside the Avocet Cafe, there is an existing dropped kerb which is 'protected' by approx 10 feet of double yellow line road markings.  The purpose of this dropped kerb and parking restriction, is to provide a clear access space from the footway to the carriageway for loading and unloading, especially for the Refuse collection team who need access to their waiting lorry.  It is also very handy for people using mobility scooters.

If the dropped kerb and yellow lines are removed from outside the Avocet Cafe and repainted outside 88 Fore Street, then loading and unloading can take place via the new dropped kerb, and the total length of available on-street parking spaces will remain virtually unaltered. We await the response.

This is the time of year when we plan our programme of walks around the town. They take place on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, starting at 2pm from 1 May until 30 September. This year a number of our guides have indicated that they need a rest from their commitments and we are therefore seeking additional guides. If you have an interest in the town and would be willing to commit about six afternoons during the summer season to guiding groups of visitors around the town please contact Daphne Burdick on 877296. Training will be given.

Our talk this month will be on Thursday 24 March and will be given by one of our Committee Members, Malcolm Holding. His topic is "The Earls of Devon – 1200 years of Devon History". As usual, the talk takes place in Matthews Hall, starting at 7-30.
