The Topsham Society Art Prize is awarded each year to a pupil at Topsham School who has undertaken a project at home. This year the topic was “Transport”, and the competition was open to children in Year 2 (aged 6 and 7 years). They produced some excellent work including pictures, models, and collections of materials.

The high standard of the entries made it difficult to select a single winner, but eventually it was decided to award the prize to Alice Hammond who had constructed a model of the Topsham to Turf ferry, “Sea Dream II”, using cardboard. This was felt to represent not only transport, but also had a strong local connection. Alice receives book tokens, and has her name engraved on the Cup which she will keep at home during the summer holiday. The Cup was presented by Daphne Burdick and John Conolly at the end of year school assembly.

During this year the Topsham Society has been working on an update of the Townscape Review and Design Statement published in 2005 and a response to the Exeter City Council Conservation Area Appraisal published in 2010. The draft of the Update is now ready for review and consultation by the people of Topsham.

An exhibition has been arranged for Friday 16 September from 2pm until 8pm and Saturday 17 September from 10am until 2pm at the Malt House in the Globe Hotel. We hope many residents of Topsham will find the time to visit the exhibition and give us feedback on the action plan we propose. Following consultation the Update will be revised to reflect comments received. It will be published and available for purchase. It will also be the basis for our discussions with the City and County Councils.
