Feb 2008 At the recent Memorial Service for Caroline Oboussier, many tributes were paid to her work on behalf of our community. The Topsham Society and the Museum Society have unanimously agreed that a further fitting tribute would be to re-name our joint annual lecture as The Oboussier Lecture in recognition of her and Philippe’s outstanding contributions to both organisations. The inaugural Oboussier Lecture will be held in Matthews Hall this autumn. There were several candidates for our annual Enhancing Topsham Award. These included two nominations for work at the museum. The architectural merits of their new gallery extension competed closely with the community benefits of the public access to its riverside gardens. We decided that the new gallery extension was a worthy winner; and we wish the Museum good luck in their bid for further funding. A date for your diaries and calendars - on Tuesday 3rd June 2008 The Topsham Society’s Summer Outing will be a trip to Sherborne Castle and Sherborne town. Sherborne Castle was built in 1594 for Sir Walter Raleigh and has been the home of the Digby family since 1617. “Capability” Brown developed the grounds and created the 50-acre lake in 1753. Today rich interiors and splendid collections of art, furniture and porcelain are on view in the castle. The beautiful Lakeside Gardens provide a magnificent tranquil setting for visitors to explore. Sherborne town was founded by Saxons and has a 15c abbey and many other buildings of interest. Full details of the Summer Outing, including information on how to book, will be included in the Spring newsletter to members of The Topsham Society, in the April edition of Estuary and of course on www.topshamsociety.co.uk. |
