April 2008 The Society’s summer outing this year is a trip on Tuesday 3rd June to Sherborne and Sherborne Castle. The plan is to depart at 8.45 a.m. from Holman Way car park and spend the morning plus lunch or a picnic at the Castle. In the afternoon we visit Sherborne. There will be time for tea before returning to Topsham, to arrive back between 6.00 and 6.30 p.m. Sherborne Castle was built in 1594 for Sir Walter Raleigh and has been the home of the Digby family since 1617. “Capability” Brown developed the grounds and created the 50-acre lake in 1753. Splendid collections of art, furniture and porcelain are on view in the castle and the beautiful Lakeside Gardens provide a magnificent tranquil setting for visitors to explore. The town was founded by Saxons and has a 15c abbey and many other buildings of interest. The cost of the trip is £17.50 per person and includes travel and entry to the Castle and grounds (but not meals). If you would like to book you should contact Jane Coleman (01392 876456) or David Woods (01392 874901) or, for members, fill in the form that will be circulated with the Spring Newsletter (see below). One more date for your diaries and calendars. On the evening of Wednesday 21st May the 44th Annual General Meeting of the Topsham Society will be held in the Malt House of the Globe Hotel. The formal notice of the meeting will be circulated to members around the end of April together with the Society’s Spring Newsletter, which will include a booking form for the visit to Sherborne.
