October 2008

It has been a tradition for the Topsham Museum and The Topsham Society jointly to arrange the Annual Topsham Lecture.  It was decided earlier this year to rename the lecture the Oboussier Lecture, in memory of Caroline Oboussier and in recognition of her and Philippe’s outstanding contributions to The Topsham Society and the Topsham Museum over many years.  The inaugural Oboussier Lecture will be held in Matthews Hall on 23rd October at 6.45 for 7.30 p.m.  The speaker is John Thorp, who knew Caroline well and who is an expert on vernacular architecture, traditional building construction and 17c town houses, among other things.  He was a field worker for the Listed Building Re-Survey of Devon and Cornwall and is co-author of “Devon Thatch and Thatching”.

The Topsham Society Calendar is establishing itself as a Topsham tradition.  The 2009 calendar will again feature stunning photographs of the town, and of key events in 2008, produced by local photographers. This year it has been generously sponsored by the Globe Hotel.  It is available from The Topsham Society (Myra Green 01392 873059 or through this website and at the Society’s Autumn events. You can also buy the calendar from the Topsham Museum shop, the Globe Hotel, Joel Segal Books and other Topsham outlets. The cost is £5.80 (10 for £50).
