September 2008 John Conolly and Daphne Burdick attended the end of term assembly at The Topsham School on Tuesday 22nd July 2008 to present the Topsham Society Jubilee Cup to the winner of the art competition. The entrants were all from the younger end of the school, and the theme of their work was the same as the Topsham Museum summer exhibition entitled "Leisure and Pleasure on the River Exe". Some very interesting pieces of work had been produced which demonstrated both talent and enthusiasm, and which made selecting a winner quite difficult. The award eventually went to Oliver Truman who had assembled pieces of stick, shells and netting found on the beach into a fishing rod with a large, brightly decorated fish on the hook. He took the Cup home for the holiday, and his name will be engraved on it at the beginning of the autumn term. We were pleased to see that a planning application has been submitted for the substantial restoration of the Sea Scouts Hut in Ferry Road. The plans represent a significant improvement on the existing building. The first of the Autumn/Winter series of talks will be the inaugural Oboussier Lecture on the evening of Thursday 23rd October in Matthews Hall. This is arranged jointly by The Topsham Society and Topsham Museum. Details of the speaker and timing will be on the website soon and in the Autumn Newsletter for members of The Topsham Society.GEOFF WILKINSON (879107) |
